The Moyo Center will udpate special education classrooms at Saint Ignatius School and Saint Vincent Pallotti School into model-inclusive spaces for students with disabilities such as autism, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy. These classrooms will provide hands-on training for teachers, equipping them with the skills, tools, and resources needed to support diverse learners. This initiative addresses barriers such as limited diagnoses and resources, aiming to enhance educational outcomes and promote inclusion in local schools and communities.

Pilot Program

Pilot Phase Goals

In partnership with the Grace Foundation and Africa Education Program (AEP), U.S.-based nonprofits with over 20 years of experience in education in Zambia & Rwanda. They offer strategic guidance, financial oversight, and program support to ensure long-term sustainability. A dedicated office in Kigali manages operations, fosters stakeholder engagement, and coordinates on-the-ground activities.

Phase 1: Inclusive Classrooms

The Moyo Center will renovate special education classrooms at St Ignatius School in Kigali and Saint Vincent Pallotti School in Masaka into model spaces. Disabilities of current students include autism, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and dyslexia.

Phase 2: Teacher Training

The demonstration classrooms will serve as a hub for practical experience and skill development, empowering special education teachers to better support their students with tools, expertise, specialized curriculum and assessment frameworks.

Phase 3: Overcoming Barriers

The demonstration phase aims to overcome key barriers faced by students, including the lack of proper diagnosis, under-trained teachers, and limited resources, to enhance educational outcomes. By collaborating with stakeholders, the initiative seeks to promote inclusion and accessibility in both schools and communities.

Program Timeline

Over the course of three phases, we will design curriculum, teaching materials, and assessment tools, while facilitating teacher trainings and providing ongoing support. The program will conclude with the development of a proof of concept report and a strategic plan for the next phase.

Our Guiding Principles

At the Moyo Center, we are committed to creating a program that reflects cultural sensitivity and understanding within Rwanda, while fostering community engagement and collaboration. Our approach ensures accessibility and inclusivity in every sense—not just physically—and promotes gender equity by providing a secure and safe environment for all. We prioritize future-proofing our designs with flexibility and adaptability in mind, integrating appropriate technologies to enhance learning and support. By creating a therapeutic and supportive atmosphere that nurtures both mental and physical well-being, we encourage outdoor and nature-based learning, while also minimizing environmental impact, energy consumption, and operational costs.
